Fire fighters from Killybegs who battled flames in a blazing building to save the life of an elderly lady are to be honoured at the national awards ceremony organised by Comhairle na Míre Gaile – The National Bravery Awards.

There ceremony takes place this coming Friday, November 13 at Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, Castleknock, Dublin commencing at 1.45pm

The award is being presented to Killybegs Fire Brigade as a whole for a rescue the brigade carried out on November 2, 2013. The brigade was alerted at 8.17am on that date to a fire at a public house in Killybegs that had living accommodation at first floor level.

On arrival smoke was billowing from the building and the Incident Commander was informed that an elderly lady was in the overhead accommodation. The fire which originated on the ground floor had already penetrated to the first floor.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus entered the building to rescue the lady and were successful in that mission which was done in parallel with the fire fighting operation. The lady was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital where thankfully she made a full recovery.

The Incident Commander, Station Officer Kevin Conwell, on being congratulated by the Chief Fire Officer, Joseph McTaggart, for a job well done modestly replied ‘that is what we do’

The Chief Fire Officer congratulates Killybegs Fire Brigade on being presented with this award which is a recognition of the many and varied challenges the brigades face in delivering their public protection roles.

The Killybegs Brigade will be represented on Friday by Station Officer Kevin Conwell, Sub Station Officer, Sean Curran. The ceremony will also be attended by Assistant Chief Fire Officer Kevin McGarvey and Joseph McTaggart, the Chief Fire Officer for Donegal Fire Service.
